Shinsel family blog

It was when I was first married, so coming up on 10 years ago, when several of the girls and respective spouses were home for some sort of family event. Robin and I had gotten into an all out throw-down girl fight with all of the yelling and storming around the house that goes with it. In the midst of the chaos, Dad quietly intervened, and in typical dad fashion brought all of the fighting to a sudden halt. He said something about how sad it makes him to have his children not getting along, and followed it up with the double whammy. Something along the lines of "You know both of my parents died at 72 (to which age he'd already arrived at this point) and it would just break my heart if I were to one day soon come back to my funeral to see my children treating each other this way." You can imagine the apologies, hugging and tears that ensued in our little houseful of women (much to the shock of my newlywed husband who looked on in dumbfounded amazement--that would NEVER have worked in his house).

I've been reflecting on that incident a lot with dads recent passing. I know that his heart, instead of being broken, was bursting with joy as we all came together this past week to remember and celebrate his life. I think that Dad was thrilled to see all of his living children together, enjoying each other's company. So in that spirit I've decided to create this blog. I'm inviting all of dad's children (grand kids and other relatives are also welcome--just send me an e-mail and I will add you to the list) to be authors on this blog so that we can do a better job of keeping in touch with each other. Don't worry--it's not hard (I'll be glad to help anyone who has any technical difficulties) and there is no pressure to blog with any particular frequency. Just check-in every once in a while and let everyone know what's going on in your life. In any case, I thought it'd be worth a try. Let me know what you think.

  2. What yelling and storming around? A lady of breeding ought never to raise her voice any louder than the gentle hum of a whisper in the wind.
